Oil spill cap helps static kill
Before hurricanes begin to rampage, static kill might stop BP oil leak
Monday was when the "static kill" was supposed to start for BP's Macondo well. Bonnie delayed the static kill from happening about one week until static kill was done on day 100 of the Gulf of Mexico 2010 oil spill. The static kill will put a bunch of mud within the well before the "bottom kill". This is the worst oil spill that has occurred within the U.S. and prepared kills should be enough to stop it. Oil spill cap helps static kill
BP put a temporary oil spill cap on so they could move on with ending this problem. The New York Times reports that an earlier effort to seal the well comparable to the static kill, using much of the exact same equipment, failed over the Memorial Day weekend. The "top kill" didn't work because the mud was not as strong as the oil pressure being released from the well. But now the oil spill cap has stopped the flow, the BP engineers say the static kill has a much better chance at success.
Static kill the beginning with bottom kill after
Mud is going to be pumped into the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico where the original preventer failed to work the first time. The Times Picayune in New Orleans reports that about 12,000 barrels of mud, six times the amount of oil believed to be in the well bore, are on instant standby. Stronger mud can be used for the bottom will that has about 37,000 barrels waiting to be pumped in. When the mud goes in, crews will watch to see how the pressure within the well is doing. The pressure within the well needs to get to a "static condition". The final 100 feet of relief well should be drilled following the kills are complete.
Finishing before a hurricane hits
The kills are supposed to be done before August is over. BP wants to do the static kill besides the relief well so close to a finish, reports the Associated Press. The relief well would do better after a static kill. In case the relief well doesn't work, this will ensure everything is finished. The process also needs to be complete with the threat of storms within the way. Between mid-August and late October there are bound to be a bit of hurricanes when is why Federal Officials hope BP will finish before then.
